If you are under 18, you need a parent’s permission to get most kinds of healthcare services.

You can get some reproductive health care services on your own without telling your parents.

These can include

At any age:

  • birth control (all kinds – including pills, IUD, shots, emergency contraception/morning after pill)
  • pregnancy testing
  • abortion
  • prenatal care
  • labor and delivery
  • care if you have been sexually assaulted

When you are 12 or older:

  • STI and HIV testing, treatment and preventive care

Your parents cannot force you to get any of the above services and a doctor cannot make you get your parents’ permission for the care. If a doctor tells you that you must have your parents sign, contact a legal services agency near you or contact us.
