If you are under 18, you need a parent’s permission to get most kinds of healthcare services.
You can get some reproductive health care services on your own without telling your parents.
These can include
At any age:
- birth control (all kinds – including pills, IUD, shots, emergency contraception/morning after pill)
- pregnancy testing
- prenatal care
- labor and delivery
- care if you have been sexually assaulted
When you are 12 or older:
- STI and HIV testing and treatment
Your parents cannot force you to get any of the above services and a doctor cannot make you get your parents permission for the care. If a doctor tells you that you must have your parents sign, contact a legal services agency near you or contact us.
